History

In order to provide enough teachers for junior and high schools to meet the requirement of the new nine-year national compulsory education plan in 1968, the Ministry of Education in 1967 encouraged the public universities to create related departments and programs. Because of that, " the History Department of the National Chengchi University," was authorized to be established , with Professor Hsu Chia-chi being its first Chairman. The Chairmanship was continued through Professors Fang Hao, Yan Hsin-hen, Wang Shou-nan, Wu Jun-yi, Chang Jer-lang , Lin Neng-shih , Chou Hui-min , Hsueh Hua-yuan , Pang Ming-fui , Tang Chi-hua , Lu Shao-li , Liu, Hsiang-kwang to Yang, Jui-sung, current Chair. In addition to training teachers, the History Department also emphasized the significance of cultivating research specialists. Because of this added responsibility, the Ministry of Education in 1976 commanded the department to inaugurate a Graduate School to specialize in the study of the history of modern China and her international relationship. Professor Yan Hsin-hen was its first Director. When the graduate program first started,it only offered courses leading to the M.A. degree. In 1987, the Ph.D. program was added to it. The scope of the Graduate School programs has since extended to cover the fields of the history of Taiwan and the history of Chinese political system, aiming to offer courses in more diverse way. In 1992, because the school educational structure was reorganized, the graduate school and the department were integrated into one system. Currently, the History Department is staffed with 23 full-time teaching faculties, 220 undergraduate students and 90 graduate students.
